How Often Should You Change Hot Tub Water?

You just got into your hot tub, and you’re enjoying the warm, soothing water after a long day at work. But as a responsible owner, a thought pops into your head: when was the last time I refilled this thing? How often should you change hot tub water, anyway?

Well, the answer isn’t as simple as it seems. It depends on several factors such as usage frequency, maintenance routine, and environmental conditions. In this blog post, we will discuss each factor in detail to help you determine how often you should change your hot tub water.

1. Usage Frequency

The more frequently you use your hot tub, the quicker it requires a water change. So, if you use it daily or have multiple users, it’s a good idea to replace the water every three months.

But if you use it only occasionally or seasonally, once every four to six months should do the trick.

2. Maintenance Routine

In many cases, a well-maintained hot tub requires less frequent water changes than a poorly maintained one. Those who regularly clean their filters and surfaces and balance chemicals, can often go up to six months without changing the water (though three is still the recommendation for best results).

On the other hand, if you neglect maintenance tasks or overuse chemicals like chlorine or bromine, then you should change it more often, as the water quality deteriorates faster.

3. Environmental Conditions

Your local climate can affect how often you should change hot tub water. For instance, if you live in a humid area with high temperatures like Florida or Texas where algae growth is common, it may benefit you to drain and refill every two months.

The same is true if your location experiences heavy rainfalls or dusty winds that accumulate debris in your hot tub quickly. In fact, if there are visible signs that your water quality is compromised, then you may want to change it immediately after a significant weather event.

4. Water Quality

The quality of tap water varies from place to place due to different mineral content levels and treatment methods used by municipal authorities. In some areas with high calcium hardness or alkalinity levels (commonly known as hard water), scaling may occur on surfaces and clog filters over time.

As a result, draining the hot tub every three months and using a scale remover may be your best bet. But if you have soft water, you may be able to extend the interval to four to six months.

5. Chemical Imbalance

Finally, if you notice that your hot tub water has an unusual smell, colour, or foam, it’s time to change the water regardless of the last change date. These signs indicate a chemical imbalance caused by excessive use of chemicals or poor maintenance.

By draining and refilling the hot tub, you’ll help eliminate any bacteria or contaminants present in the water and provide a clean and healthy environment for future use.

The Bottom Line

So, how often should you change hot tub water? Well, it depends on several factors such as usage frequency, maintenance routine, environmental conditions, water quality, and chemical balance.

As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to replace hot tub water every three months, but more often if you’re noticing signs of deterioration like odor or discoloration. By following these guidelines and maintaining your hot tub regularly, you can ensure optimal performance and longevity of your investment. Happy soaking!
