While hot tubs are usually a source of relaxation and enjoyment, you’ll need to do a little work to keep the water crystal clear and inviting. That’s why learning how to clean a hot tub filter properly is important, as it ensures that it will work effectively and keep your water clean.

In this guide, we’ll show you three simple ways to clean your hot tub filter like a pro. Don’t worry – you’ll be back to relaxing in no time!

Why Is It Important to Clean Hot Tub Filters?

As you can probably imagine, your hot tub filter plays an important role in maintaining clean and safe water. After all, it traps debris, oils, and contaminants, preventing them from circulating in the water.

Plus, clean filters can also help your hot tub’s pump and heater operate more efficiently. In fact, neglecting filter maintenance can lead to cloudy water and even strain on your hot tub’s components.

How to Clean a Hot Tub Filter

Now, we’re going to show you three ways to keep your hot tub filters clean and sparkling: one for a weekly clean, another for a monthly, and a final one for about 3-4 times a year. With these three methods in your arsenal, you won’t have to worry about an unclean filter ruining your hot tub experience!

1. Hose Rinse (Weekly)

A quick weekly rinse is a great way to prevent debris buildup and take some of the pressure off of your sanitizer. Simply:

  • Remove the filters from your hot tub
  • Using a garden hose or even a large sink, thoroughly rinse them with clean water. Remember to spread apart each pleat and rinse between them for best results.
  • Before putting it back into your hot tub, allow the filter to air dry

2. Chemical Spray and Rinse (Monthly)

A weekly rinse won’t solve all of your filter cleaning needs. So, once a month, be sure to do a chemical spray and rinse. You’ll need to:

  • Use a hot tub filter cleaner to spray your filters and let them soak for about 15 minutes. If your filter cleaner doesn’t come in a spray bottle, you can pour it into a clean one yourself.
  • Rinse the filters thoroughly with clean water

If your cleaner is a concentrate that needs dilution, make sure to dilute it following the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Chemical Soak (Every 3-4 Months)

You’ll want to do a deep clean every 3-4 months to keep your filters in good condition. For this method, you’ll need to:

  • Dilute the hot tub filter cleaning chemical with water (as directed on the bottle) in a large bucket. Ensure there’s enough water to completely cover at least one filter.
  • Soak the filter in the solution for 24 hours, or at minimum overnight
  • Take the filter out of the bucket and thoroughly rinse it with a hose. And don’t be tempted to cut corners, here – any remaining cleaning chemical residue can lead to hot tub foam
  • Allow the filter to air dry before reinstalling it in the hot tub

The Bottom Line

Now that you know how to clean a hot tub filter, you can ensure that your hot tub water remains crystal clear and ready for a relaxing soak at any time. Remember, a well-maintained filter not only keeps your water inviting, but also extends the life of your hot tub’s components. So, follow this guide, establish a regular maintenance routine, and enjoy the delightful experience of your well-maintained hot tub for years to come.
