Lifting the cover on your spa should release a little steam and maybe a faint whiff of chlorine — not the smell of a locker room. But when your hot tub smells bad, it’s more than an annoyance. Odor is the first sign that your water chemistry or equipment isn’t keeping up, and ignoring it only makes things harder to fix later.

Read on to learn what those smells mean, why they matter, and how to bring your water back to clear, clean, and fresh.

Why You Should Be Concerned About Hot Tub Smells

Hot tub water odor isn’t harmless. Over time, neglected water can corrode heaters, clog jets, and damage the interior finish.

See, once minerals and bacteria settle into the plumbing, they form layers that ordinary cleaning just can’t reach. That’s when a spa smells like mildew even after you’ve shocked or drained it.

Worse, bad-smelling water also affects the people using it. Bacteria and chemical fumes can irritate skin and eyes, especially for anyone soaking regularly. So, treating the smell quickly isn’t just about convenience — it’s how you can protect both your health and the life of your spa.

Why Your Hot Tub Smells Bad and How to Fix It

Hot tubs develop odor for several specific reasons. Each one affects the system differently, and knowing which kind of smell you’re dealing with helps you treat it correctly.

Old or overloaded water

After months of use, water collects sweat, oils, lotion, and residue from cleaning agents. Even if it looks fine, it starts to feel sticky and smell slightly sour. Once that happens, no amount of sanitizer will fully mask the odor.

To fix old or overloaded water:

  1. Drain the tub completely and
  2. Clean the shell with a mild spa-safe cleaner
  3. Flush the jets and refill with fresh water

As a routine, replace the water every three to four months to keep buildup under control.

Dirty filters

Filters are meant to trap debris, but once they clog, they trap odor too. When air smells stale or “wet,” it’s often because the filters are overloaded and water can’t circulate freely.

Fortunately, solving this problem is easy: just remove filters weekly and rinse them with a hose to clear away debris. Then, every month, soak them in a filter cleaner designed for spa use.

If the material still looks dull or feels slimy after washing, replace the filter altogether.

Biofilm in plumbing

That swampy smell that lingers even after you’ve drained and refilled? That’s biofilm, a slimy layer of bacteria inside the plumbing. It resists sanitizers and keeps regenerating the smell.

For this one, be sure to use a line-flush product before draining the tub. These hot tub cleaning products break down the film so it can be rinsed away.

Once everything has been flushed, do a simple drain, scrub, and refill. You should notice immediately that the smell vanishes and the sanitizer lasts longer.

Unbalanced water chemistry

If the scent is more chemical than musty, your water chemistry is probably off. When pH or alkalinity drifts out of range, chlorine or bromine becomes unstable and gives off strong fumes.

You may already know the basics of fixing this one here: test the water weekly and adjust the balance carefully. Try to keep the pH between 7.2 and 7.8 to prevent both harsh fumes and bacterial growth.

Stagnant water

When a spa sits unused, water stops circulating and loses oxygen. That stillness produces a flat, earthy odor that clings to the cover.

Run the pumps daily or use a timer to circulate water for at least fifteen minutes. Leave the cover open for a short while afterward so condensation and trapped odors can escape. Fresh air and movement prevent the problem entirely.
